Introduction/Overview

For the second year running Dark & White Events are organising a Peak District based Adventure Race series; for 2008 the events will all be 6 hours in length and planned principally around mountain biking and trail running. Besides the biking and running there will be other challenges on each event such as orienteering, scrambling, rope work, abseiling, climbing, night navigation, water based activities etc….

The events are organised so as to be challenging both mentally and physically for both beginners to the sport and experienced adventure racers - basically you do as much or as little as you like for the duration of the event! You either put pressure on yourself or you don't! So long as you can ride a mountain bike, run for about 90 minutes at a steady pace and have a basic grasp of navigation you can be assured that these events will test both your legs and your brains. Events will be open to solos and pairs, in various classes and will be 6 hours long (with a maximum time limit). SPORTident electronic timing will be used.

The series of events will be run as a mini-league; prizes will be awarded in each class by Skins, Buff and Dark & White based on the best three scores out of the five events. It is not necessary to enter the league as a whole; you can enter any of the individual events.

Entry forms will be published on our website on the Events page. Details of the event area plus start/finish venue directions will be detailed on our website one month before the event. Final race information will be handed out to entrants upon arrival at registration on the day of each event.

Event Format

The principal challenge of the events will be to use your skill and initiative to complete the course within the time allowed - event strategy and route planning will be as important as fitness.

The events will be based around the following disciplines:

  1. Mountain biking - the biking section or sections will be Trailquest type being orienteering/navigation based using a combination of roads, lanes and permissible rights of way i.e. bridleways, BOATS and RUPPS (but NOT footpaths).
  2. Running - the running will be orienteering/navigation using a combination of forest, woodland, moorland or open land using footpaths and other permissible rights of way.
  3. A third challenge will be included in each event such as orienteering, scrambling, rope work, abseiling, climbing, night navigation, a water based activity etc etc….basic details of the whole event format will be given out one month before the event when the start/finish venue information is put up on the website. You will then be advised as to whether you will need to bring any appropriate extra kit. The exact event format will be advised on arrival at the event.

On each section of the event navigation, route finding and timing will be the key to a successful overall race. A combination of OS and orienteering maps of various scales will be used - maps will be issued at the start (or in some cases en-route) and will be over-printed with all relevant information including the location of all relevant control points. The challenge will be to amass as many points as practicable in the time allowed by visiting as many of the control points as possible, the control points having varying points values. There will be a maximum time for the whole event and penalties incurred and points deducted for any lateness.

You will only be able to visit mountain biking controls on the bike and running ones on foot - if you are found to break this rule you will be effectively disqualified from the event unless it is proved to be a genuine mistake.

It is likely there will be a "transition" point on each event (or possibly more than one depending on the event format) and this will be advised in the information pack given out at registration.

The overall event format will be "flexible" and there will undoubtedly be surprises - you have been warned!! How you tackle the event and the disciplines is up to you - this is where your skills and initiative come in.
