The Event Centre/Location/Event Area

The start/finish is from Hope Sports Pavilion, Hope, Derbyshire. Grid Ref: 167834. Look out for the roadside event signs - there is hard standing car parking for early arrivals at Hope Valley College. There are toilets but limited changing. For Friday or Saturday evening accommodation contact Castleton TIO: 01433 620679. The event is all on Dark Peak Outdoor Leisure 1:25000 sheet No.1. Maps extracts of the area can be supplied at the start provided they are pre-ordered: see entry form below.

The Challenge

Entrants may opt for the 8.5 or 20 mile route. Checkpoint sites will be identified by red/white orienteering "kites" on an obvious feature to which a SPORTident timing box will be attached. Dib in the SPORTident box at the start, finish, all checkpoints visited and THE DOWNLOAD BOX at the end. You must use a SPORTident dibber to take part in this event. You may use your own dibber if you have one (please fill in its number on the entry form). Alternatively we will rent dibbers to those who do not have one. At registration you will also be provided with a full route description and there will be maps on display with both routes marked. Failure to follow the prescribed routes in full will result in disqualification. For safety and event monitoring purposes, some of the checkpoints will be manned.

The Start/Finish

Registration opens at 8.00am and closes at 9.30am. Runners massed start at 10.00am. Finish closes at 4.00pm. PLEASE DO NOT START without (a) registering and (b) passing the start official and dibbing in the CHECK timing box. Checkpoint closing/cut off times will be detailed on the route description sheets.
******The Golden Rule - if you are unable to complete the event you MUST either (a) telephone the organisers or (b) report to the finish with your dibber to save a mountain rescue search party being sent out. A central telephone number will be detailed on your route description******

Results & Awards

The results will be on www.darkandwhite.co.uk shortly after the event. There will be prizes for the first 3 overall fastest male & female runners on both routes - these will either be awarded on the day or posted afterwards.

Equipment

Due to the high level nature of this event you MUST wear/carry the following items:
  1. Proper fell running shoes that in the organisers opinion are fully suitable for the type of rough terrain that will be encountered.
  2. Waterproof cagoule/jacket (ideally with taped seams);
  3. hat;
  4. gloves;
  5. compass (preferably a Silva type);
  6. whistle;
  7. map;
  8. a set of event directions;
  9. a Sportident dibber;
  10. a sufficient supply of liquid and food to see you through the event.

PLEASE DO NOT SKIMP ON EQUIPMENT - IT IS NOT WORTH IT!! Allow for the fact that it will be October and you will at times be on exposed high ground and dress/carry equipment accordingly. Marshals will disqualify anyone who in their opinion does not meet these criteria. NOTE: this applies to ALL competitors on BOTH routes!!
