DW4 Challenge Round 2 - the Cliffhanger Weekend (09/07/2009 10:42:13)

DW4 Round 2 Adventure Race 12th July 2009

From the Cliffhanger Outdoor Show, Millhouses Park, Sheffield

Free car parking for competitors is available at: The Bannerdale Centre Walk or ride from there to the event (it will take about 10 mins to walk).

Free entry to Cliffhanger: You must enter via the Competitors Entrance in the North West corner of the park (closest to the parking and the Bannerdale Centre). Download a site map. The Competitors Entrance will open at 9.50am and close at 10.10am. You need to get there on time to so we can let you in before Cliffhanger opens up to the public. If you are going to be late please ring Richard on 07974 983670 or Adrian on 07970 278085.

There will be a safe penned off area to leave your bike during the event. PLEASE BRING A BIKE LOCK - this will be needed before and after the event if you want to look around the site as the normal (non-event) bike store is in the middle of the site in a tennis court.

Race start: 10.50am- see more details below

The race format:

10:50am to 11.10am - start when you like within this time window. The start box will be at the top of a bouldering wall. Climb to the top, dib in the box and abseil down. You’ll be provided with a harness and helmet and the climbing will be easy enough to do in your trainers. There is no rush. Your event time starts only when you dib in the start box. For those not wanting to climb, a second start box will be available but you will need to have a short delay equivalent to the time it takes to descend and take your climbing equipment off. Once you’re back on the ground there will then be a 90 minute run phase so you can start to collect some points! (NB - exit/re-entry will be via the Competitors entrance - there will be a marked route. You must be back from your run within 90 minutes.

12:20 to 12:40 - return from your run to the registration area within this time window. You will be given a second SPORTident dibber to use on an orienteering course within the Cliffhanger site (15-25 mins running). DO NOT USE YOUR NORMAL DIBBER - if you do, you will exceed its memory and all your final controls later in the event will not be recorded!

12:40 to 13:25 - back to the registration area within this time window. Hand back your second SPORTident dibber, collect your bike and head off to collect some more points! (Again exit/re-entry is via the marked Competitors entrance).

After the biking you must be back within 3 hours 55 minutes of starting as we have one last mini-challenge for you as follows:

14:40 to 15:05 - return with bike to the registration area. Drop off your bike and run to the Water Sports Zone. The final control box will be in the middle of the pond. It’s a wade, not a swim and there will be spectators. Dib and return to the registration area to finish. If you are late back you do not need to punch the “pond” box but it will have a high points value so it is worth leaving enough time!

After finishing you will need to download your dibber to ensure you are in the results.
You then have until 6.30 pm to recover and enjoy the rest of the show! If you are late back:
a) After the initial 90 minute run - we only have use of the orienteering course between 12.00 and 1.00pm. If you are very late back from the run you will not be allowed to orienteer and you will therefore miss out on these points.
b) At the end of the event (after 4 hours) - there will be penalty points if you exceed 4 hours total as follows: 0-5mins late 1point/min; 5-10 minutes late 2 points per minute; 10-15 minutes late 5 points per minute; 15-30 minutes late 10 points per minute; over 30 minutes late - all points lost!

Kit requirements: please look at the entry form/download for the full kit list required: As a ground rule bike specific kit can be left with the bike (helmet, cycle shoes, bike tools) when you are out doing other things so bring a suitable box/bag to keep it safe by your bike at registration. The remainder of the kit on the list such as waterproofs etc will need to be carried by you throughout the duration of the event (depending on the weather this may be relaxed a bit on the day but come prepared to carry everything!)
